Virtual therapy with a licensed clinician is available anywhere in Florida today, with evening and weekend availability. Matching is based on what you are dealing with, when you can meet and what you want from a clinician, and usually completes within days.

In-person clinics are opening in Miami and Tampa. Addresses have not been announced, so every session booked today is virtual.

This catches people out, and it is far better raised in your first conversation than discovered in December. Therapists are licensed by state, and care is generally tied to where you are physically located during a session — not where you or the clinician normally live. A therapist who sees you in Florida in February may not be able to continue when you are north in July.

The practical consequence is that a course of therapy can be interrupted by a flight rather than by any clinical decision, halfway through work that was going somewhere. If you spend part of the year elsewhere, say so at the outset and ask directly what happens when you travel. It is a routine question and any practice used to Florida should have a ready answer.

Florida uses its own title for the most common counseling licence: LMHC, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, where most states use LPC. Alongside it are LCSWs, LMFTs and Licensed Psychologists. Licensure is administered through the Florida Department of Health, whose public verification service confirms whether a licence is genuine, active and free of disciplinary history.

The naming difference matters more than it sounds: searching directories for an LPC in Florida returns almost nothing and can leave you concluding there is nobody available. Our Florida guide covers that, along with what a registered intern is and why that tier is often worth asking about.

Medicare's coverage of outpatient mental health has broadened in recent years, including which categories of clinician can bill for it. Rather than assume in either direction, ask any practice two specific things: whether they are currently enrolled as a Medicare provider, and what you will owe per session after Medicare pays. Accepting Medicare and being enrolled in it are not the same thing, and only the second determines what gets paid.

If you hold Medicare Advantage rather than original Medicare, the network is set by your plan rather than by Medicare, so check against the plan name rather than the word "Medicare".

A significant share of enquiries from Florida come from someone arranging care for an older parent rather than for themselves. The most common mistake is framing therapy as a response to a deficiency, which lands as a verdict and gets declined on principle.

Two things help more than anything else: choosing the format on their terms rather than yours — phone is a legitimate option, not a lesser one — and ruling out the physical first, since flat mood and fatigue in an older adult can come from thyroid problems, medication interactions or hearing loss as easily as from depression. Tell us what is going on and when you can realistically meet, and mention up front if you spend part of the year outside Florida or if Medicare will be involved. Both change the answer, and both are much easier to work with before a match than after one.
